Cosmic Crusader Turns a Flemington Bog into a Cox Plate Launchpad

Andrea Leek's breakthrough Group 1 winner stretched to 2000 metres, handled the heavy ground and put the Cox Plate firmly on the agenda.

More than 70 millimetres of rain landed on Flemington before Turnbull Stakes Day, but Cosmic Crusader looked entirely at home when the Group 1 feature got serious. William Pike kept the Pakenham-trained gelding balanced in the Heavy 10 conditions before sending him clear over the closing stages.

The result was a one-and-three-quarter-length win over Light Infantry Man, with Aeliana another length away in third. It was Cosmic Crusader's first attempt beyond 1800 metres and the strongest performance of trainer Andrea Leek's career.

The next target makes the story even better. With Moonee Valley being rebuilt, the Cox Plate will be run at Flemington on 24 October, giving Cosmic Crusader a chance to return to the scene of his biggest win for Australia's weight-for-age championship.

A wet-track breakthrough, a first Group 1 for the stable and a home-ground Cox Plate ahead: spring has found one of its best stories.
